PlayMakers 'family-friendly "Shipwrecked! An Entertainment" explores imagination

PlayMakers Repertory Company opened its holiday season with a whimsical adventure story about truth, fiction and the colorful world that can exist between the two. Steering away from the oversaturated digital age, “Shipwrecked! An Entertainment” celebrates old-fashioned storytelling to trace the real-life fabrications of the Victorian-era explorer Louis de Rougemont.

'Sweet Charity' brings spice, comedy despite lack of space

Just like its titular character, Pauper Players’ current production of the musical comedy “Sweet Charity” displays a deliberate hopefulness as it aims to escape confining limitations. Despite the spatial limitations of the Union Cabaret — where the production is staged — director and choreographer Michael McWaters presented a pleasing, dynamically choreographed evening of song and dance.

Priscilla Townsend, a freshman pursuing dental hygiene, has a three-year record contract with Bench Studios. Her first single is available on iTunes.

UNC freshman has record deal

Priscilla Townsend, a freshman pursuing dental hygiene, stopped by the Waxhaw, N.C., fair this summer to see some rescue puppies. Townsend left the fair with a three-year record contract. Townsend sang her self-authored song “How Did I Know” in a karaoke contest at the fair. The song — now her first single on iTunes — brought her victory and the attention of Charlotte-based The Bench Studios producer Rick Lapinsky, who then asked Townsend to sign with the company.

Radcliffe Bailey will be UNC artist-in-residence for 2 weeks

Radcliffe Bailey has often been hailed as an international voice for southern African American racial identity. But his artwork — paintings, sculptures and collages mixing family portraits with historical events — also brims with a profound personal significance as he aims to decipher his own cultural heritage.
