Bring Your Cell Phones To the Pit to Help Battle Local Domestic Violence

TO THE EDITOR:

In the past year, the law enforcement agencies of Orange County have responded to over 1,000 reported incidents of domestic violence. Over 400 of those cases occurred in Chapel Hill. Additionally, these frightening statistics are on the rise from previous years.

Please help us fight these statistics by bringing your out-of-service cell phones and chargers to the Pit today and tomorrow. Even if it is out-of-service, a fully charged cell phone can still be used to call 911. The cell phones will be given to ARISE-Durham Coalition for Domestic Violence Services and the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange Country.

These groups will then distribute the phones to victims of domestic violence to provide them with the sense of safety that allows them to continue with their lives rather than live in fear.

I hope students, faculty, staff and other community members will help us give domestic abuse victims some security.
