Moeser Reacts, Sets Time for Reflection Service in Wake of Tragedy

In this time of national tragedy, I ask that you make yourselves available to students as they and all the rest of us grapple with the events of earlier today. Please conduct your classes as you see fit and direct students to the resources that are available on campus. Staff in Counseling and Psychological Service in the Student Health Service are available to see any student on a walk-in basis. You also may tell students to call counselors at 966-2175.

Live broadcast television is available at various locations around campus.

Please check the online edition of the University Gazette for updates about campus activities related to this tragedy. The Auditorium in the Student Union is available for all members of the campus community today for quiet reflection and meditation. Counseling staff and campus ministers will be there. I will speak briefly at 5 p.m. to those gathered.

Tomorrow, all members of the university community are invited to come together for reflection at noon on the steps of South Building on Polk Place. This will be a time for us to gather in mourning and recognition for all that we have lost as a nation and as individuals. To allow all who wish to attend, we will suspend classes from noon until 2 p.m. tomorrow.

It is especially important in this time of uncertainty and anxiety that we adhere to our own values of fairness, justice and tolerance and that the civility that characterizes Carolina be extended to every member of the community.

James Moeser
UNC Chancellor
