UNC Faculty Points Out That DTH Left a Group Out of Tragedy Coverage

I am happy to know that The Daily Tar Heel has an ombudsman to monitor its news coverage.

A few years ago I served as vice chairman of the UNC Employee Forum.

During that time the forum met with the DTH staff to encourage and remind them that UNC staff members are also a part of the community which makes up our university. We advocated more coverage of staff news items such as Employee Forum meetings.

Since then the DTH has done a good job including staff in the news.

However, I was disappointed in the coverage of last Wednesday's memorial service at Polk Place to see a leading paragraph and photo captions leave out the fact that many staff members were present for this service and have been active in many other ways of supporting our community during this time of national grief and threat.

I hope you will remind the DTH writers that UNC staff are an integral part of the university community: students, faculty, staff and residents.

We are always in the midst of any activity that takes place here on campus.

For example numerous staff members assist with the blood drives here on campus.

We are here to serve, but it is important to recognize that we are here.

We suffer when others suffer, we cheer when others cheer. Sorry to have to send this reminder. Keep up the good work. The DTH is a fine resource for news in our community.
