During the past week the University did a commendable job of celebrating the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by putting on a week's worth of entertaining, educational and informative programs and events.
This is the 21st year that the University has taken part in an extended celebration of Dr. King's birthday. Nineteen sponsoring organizations presented a total of 14 programs and events during the week, including the Youth Leadership Day, in which approximately 50 area middle school students spent the day on campus participating in activities that helped them to appreciate Dr. King's legacy. Another event of the week was A Day of Service, where UNC students honored King's memory by using their "day off" as a "day on" working in the community.
There were obviously several other events that I, unfortunately, don't have the space to describe for you. Generally, that's a task left to the campus newspaper. However, The Daily Tar Heel decided that only one of these events, the keynote lecture by Dr. Joycelyn Elders, was worthy of an article. I find that disturbing and ridiculous.
