Campaign Rule Violation Complaint is False Alarm

Will McKinney's staff filed a complaint Monday stating that Jen Daum's Web video used too much server space.

Candidate Will McKinney's campaign staff filed a complaint to the elections board Monday, claiming that candidate Jen Daum's campaign Web site video took up more server space than regulations allow, said Emily Margolis, elections board chairwoman.

According to Academic Technology & Networks' Web site, undergraduates with an ONYEN account are allowed 100 megabytes of storage space on the University server for personal Web sites.

But Margolis said some of McKinney's campaign workers came to her concerned that Daum's video was violating what they thought was a UNC rule that students can only use up to 10 megabytes of storage space.

Daum's campaign video uses 22.8 megabytes of space, said junior Julia Grace, Daum's campaign Webmaster.

Daum said that after Margolis e-mailed the complaint to her, the video was taken off of her Web site.

But Grace said she later checked ATN's rules online and realized that McKinney's campaign workers had misunderstood the regulations.

Margolis said she met with both McKinney's and Daum's staffs and dismissed the complaint, allowing Daum to replace the video on her Web site.

But Grace said the video now is stored under her ONYEN account so that it will obey ATN's regulations. The video was originally stored under computer science space.

Margolis said the elections board would have had to fine Daum if McKinney's complaint had been valid, although she said she was not sure how much the fine would have been.

Daum said she does not think the ordeal hurt her campaign, but that it used up valuable campaigning time.

"I feel like it was more a waste of our time ... time we could have done something productive," she said.

McKinney said it was not his intention to be a whistle-blower for other candidates by issuing the complaint and said he simply was trying to make sure all candidates were playing fair. "We don't have any beef with (Daum's) video," he said. "It was a mistake on our part."
