Fayetteville State Debuts Logos for Athletics, University

The new logo features the lamp found on the 1927 Alumni Gates located at the university's main entrance.

"The lamp symbolizes learning and scholarship and a path to success for our students," said Fayetteville State spokeswoman Lauren Cook-Burgess.

She said the new logo will help the university take a direct marketing approach for the first time and will enhance its ability to attract more applicants.

"Never in the past have we pursued an organized, comprehensive marketing campaign," Cook-Burgess said. "It will enable us ... to reach new audiences."

She added that the new logo should help Fayetteville State project its strong points to potential students who might not know about the school.

Cook-Burgess said Fayetteville State is one of the fastest growing institutions in the UNC-system. The university was anticipating an enrollment of 5,000 students by 2005 and 6,000 by 2008, but its student population has already surpassed 5,000, she said.

Fayetteville State also unveiled a new Bronco logo for the athletic program. The new logo will allow the university to license and trademark the design.

Previously, the athletic teams used clip art for their logo, which prevented them from controlling who used their image. The Broncos also lacked a universal design used by all varsity teams.

Athletic Director Bill Carver said all athletic teams will continue to use uniforms with the old logos until Reebok sends a shipment with the new one.

Reebok is the corporate sponsor for all schools in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, including Fayetteville State. Carver said he hopes the school will make an exclusive deal with Reebok sometime in the future.

But Carver said he does not foresee the change having a significant impact beyond giving the program its own identity.

"I don't see any major changes except unifying (the logo)," he said. "Now you'll see our bronco and you'll know it's (Fayetteville State's)."
