GPSF President-Elect Criticizes DTH Editorial Board Endorsement

I was very disappointed to read Tuesday's editorial regarding why The Daily Tar Heel editorial board did not endorse student body president candidate Jen Daum. It was noted that Daum's "emphasis on graduate students detracts from efforts that should be directed elsewhere." I believe there are thousands of graduate students at UNC that would disagree with that sentiment.

The student body president is responsible for all students at Carolina, both graduate and undergraduate.

It has been refreshing to see a student body president candidate who embraces the scope of this position and is not solely considering the undergraduate voting population when developing a platform.

As the president-elect of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation, it is my responsibility to represent the voice of the graduate and professional student population. However, I must do this in concert with the student body president.

The fate of undergraduates is closely linked to the fate of graduate students, who teach 51 percent of classes and drive much of the research that brings prestige to this university.

Jen Daum should be commended for being acutely aware of the needs of all of her future constituents.
