RHA Survey Solicits Student Input on Variety of Issues

The survey, which will be linked to the RHA Web site, http://www.unc.edu/rha, until Feb. 8, consists of 15 questions relating to the RHA, a proposed cab service, tuition and parking.

"We all know no one likes doing surveys, so we used topics that we're working on and created questions for a short survey from there," said RHA President David Cooper.

The RHA has never conducted a survey before, and Cooper said he thought the format would be a good way to get student feedback. He said the results of the survey will be used to help him understand student concerns.

"It's a better way to know exactly how the residents feel," he said. "It will just be general information for the RHA."

But Bob Knight, chairman of the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee, said he would be interested in using the information related to parking on the RHA survey to help his committee make future decisions about parking.

One of the topics addressed in the survey is the proposal for a cab service that could either be prepaid or that could be paid with a UNC ONE Card.

"Public transportation is not as good or as reliable as it should be, and we wanted to create an alternative for students," Cooper said.

Although RHA members have talked to a few cab companies to see if there was any interest or if they were capable of providing such a service, members said they want to gather information on student opinion before making a decision.

"We want to get more statistics before we approach cab services and seriously discuss entering a contract," Cooper said.

Since the survey is posted as a link on the RHA Web site, it is possible for students to vote multiple times. But Cooper said he does not think multiple voting will be a problem. "There's no reason to (do it)," he said. "The information is just for the RHA so that we can represent what the students think."

Lynn Williford, director of institutional research at UNC, also said that in general, multiple responses are not a problem when analyzing survey results.

"We've tried to investigate this before, but we didn't get a lot of multiple responses from the same computer," she said. "It's always possible, but generally it's not a problem. The real problem is getting students to participate at all."
