"The pursuit of social justice through the cultivation of pluralism." This is the Campus Y's mission statement.
Perhaps you joined the 10,000 who gathered on Polk Place the day following Sept. 11 or heard Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi, speak of peace and tolerance to a crowd at the steps of South Building. These events, along with so many others, are what the Campus Y strives to bring to our UNC community.
As a student group comprised of 19 committees dedicated to social justice, our committees include Advocates for Human Rights, Big Buddy, Freshman Camp, the Hunger and Homelessness Outreach Project, Project Literacy, Students for the Advancement of Race Relations, Youth Outreach! and Youth for Elderly Service.
As co-presidents of the Campus Y, we would like to encourage those of you with a passion for these issues to apply for one of the 19 committee co-chairmen positions for 2002-03. Now is a time of transition; we want leaders who can bring the Campus Y to another level with new ideas, events and enthusiasm. These positions are not to be taken lightly because they require time, energy, responsibility and dedication. But being a Campus Y co-chairman is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding opportunities available for students at UNC. You have the power to make a difference and take a stand. Have your voice heard.
Even if you're not certain, even if you only feel a twinge of interest after reading this letter, take a look at our Web site or stop by the Campus Y to ask a couple questions. The issues we deal with are issues that affect us all -- race, equality, understanding and helping others. Take initiative to apply and become a leader. Applications are available at the Campus Y and online at http://campus-y.unc.edu. They are due by 5 p.m. April 4.
