This letter is in relation to the sexual assaults that have plagued the campus of late. As the number of assaults has increased, the police have been inefficient in arresting the perpetrators. Instead, they have been issuing warnings to people asking them not to walk alone at night and to use the Point-2-Point. However, they are not trying to solve the root of the problem.
The fact that we cannot feel safe on our own campus anymore is appalling! While it is understandable that students should take safety precautions while walking at night, it is not always possible to drag friends along since everyone has their own share of things to do. At times, we just have to walk alone on campus at night, and we should feel safe doing so.
Why should we have to live in fear of being sexually or physically assaulted?
The police need to beef up the security on campus, especially after dark. One can see cop cars on Franklin Street at night but no cops patrolling the campus walkways where most of the assaults take place. Students should not have to worry about their security while walking on their own campus.
