BCC Advisory Committee Seeks Applicants

As members' terms expire, the BCC is looking to fill 20 positions on its Advisory Board. The board is an on-going committee that guides the purpose and mission of the BCC.

Joseph Jordan, director of the BCC, said the advisory board is vital to the mission and decision-making processes of the BCC.

"The Advisory Board's main purpose is to offer advice and consultation to the director and staff of the BCC," Jordan said. "We're trying to find a group with the same mission as the BCC."

Jordan said the Advisory Board primarily deals with programming and suggestions for improvements in the BCC. He said board members also review proposals for programs that come to the center and that, if needed, they can serve on search committees for open positions.

The Advisory Board also helps facilitate clear and positive communication between the BCC and the University, Jordan said.

Of the board's 20 available slots, six are reserved for students, six for faculty and six for staff. The two other positions on the advisory board are for members of the community.

Jordan said all faculty, staff and community members are eligible to apply for the Advisory Board. The only requirement for students is that they be in good academic standing.

Members of the Advisory Board serve a two-year term, with a chance to serve at least one additional term.

Jordan said he expects anywhere from 60 to 65 applications for the Advisory Board.

Applications and nominations can be submitted for the offices of chairman, vice chairman, financial, secretary, recorder and general board membership.

Nominations and applications for the board are due to Jordan in the BCC office in the Student Union at 5 p.m. April 22. Applications also will be accepted by fax or e-mail.

Those submitting applications will be given a questionnaire to be evaluated by the BCC advisory board, which will choose the new members.

Current board members will choose Advisory Board members for the 2002-03 term at the April 25 BCC board meeting. New members take office at the first meeting of the fall 2002 semester.

Jordan said the Advisory Board's structure and role will remain the same, even as the BCC continues the development of its freestanding structure.

"The Advisory Board will remain solely an advisory and consultatory committee," he said. "They will still report and send their recommendations directly to me."

Jordan said board members hope to find a motivated group of people with the same goals as the organization.

"We are trying to find people with interests in what we're doing who are willing to work hard."
