Farewell to the Dean Dome

Anyway, the purpose of this column is to bid farewell to what has been a mainstay of my life for the last two years. No, I'm not dumping my girlfriend or getting a new computer (though I wish I could... the latter not the former). Instead I am saying adieu to that monstrous concrete shrine we all know and love: the Dean Smith Center.

For two years now, the view from the only window in my tiny cell... I mean, dorm room has been dominated by the Dean Dome. There is a parking lot, some trees, and some tennis courts, but for the most part, the arena takes up most of the picture.

So why am I saying goodbye? Because by miracle of miracles, I am finally escaping the ghetto. That's right, the wait is over and I am going to ascend from the dirt-choked, construction-ridden abyss that is South Campus to that mythical land of Milk and Honey and Hall Bathrooms: North Campus.

At 6:59 a.m. on the day after my birthday, I slipped into the housing registration application, and by virtue of a memorized set of keystrokes (Double tab, right, tab, space, quadruple tab, g, double tab, space, pause for page to load, double tab, space, double tab, space) I navigated my way from Hojo 722 to Graham 259. Complete time for process: < 1 minute. I was done before the clock said 7:00 a.m. How's that for efficient?

But will North Campus live up to my expectations? It is true that South Campus has been riddled with construction for the last two years, but doesn't North Campus have the same problems? Not only that, the new dorms will be finished down here, giving South Campus quite a facelift.

And how am I going to deal with living on a hall? The suite life has agreed well with me (shoutout: Sweet 7), and I don't know how the hall life will work out. Thankfully, I have heard good things so far about the bathroom situations, which aren't as dire as I may have guessed. Also, after visiting my dorm-elect, I found the residents to be very agreeable. In fact, I was quite enamored with the layout of the dorm altogether (I like having the female dorm connected to ours - there is such a thing as too much testosterone).

So while it is possible that I may have some complaints with my new residence, I don't think I'll have quite as much fun as I have had picking on South Campus for the last two years or so. But only time will tell.

So, farewell, Dean Dome. I'm sure I'll see you again next year. Don't forget to write!
