Loreleis Pull Out Stops for Concert

"We think this is going to be the most entertaining concert yet," said junior Loreleis member Jessica Factor, a journalism major.

The show, "A Night at the Grammys," will be complete with special lighting effects, skits and a red carpet to enhance its Grammy theme.

But beyond all the frills and stage tricks, the Loreleis want to make sure everyone has as much fun as they do.

Factor said that because the concert will be one of the final performances to take place in Memorial Hall before renovations begin, it will incorporate special effects that have not been an option for the Loreleis in the past.

The success of their fall 2001 concert, also their first performance in Memorial Hall, has paved the way for their recent efforts geared specifically toward technical aspects like lighting and sound. "It's the biggest endeavor we've ever done," said Keenan Tabor, a senior journalism and psychology major. "We're spending a lot of time on the technical aspects."

For Tabor and the four other senior members of the 15-member a cappella group, this will be the last concert. "I'm excited about the concert, but it's also a very sad, very emotional kind of thing," Tabor said. "Since this is the biggest concert we've ever had, and it's (the seniors') last one, it's a big deal."

The variety of songs to be performed include Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," Dave Matthews Band's "Angel" and Michelle Branch's "All I Wanted." Some songs were drawn from the fall concert, and others were learned as recently as this week.

Because this will be the last concert for the five seniors, each graduating Loreleis member has the opportunity to either perform a signature song of her own or arrange a new one to bid her fellow members goodbye.

Both Tabor and Factor expressed excitement about Tabor's parting song, the Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men," which will feature an accompaniment of special effects and skits. "We're having a lot of fun with that one, I'll just say," Factor said.

Tabor said she chose "It's Raining Men" to make her last concert one that she will look back on with a smile. "I decided that I just wanted to have a good time," she said.

Tabor said the work the group has invested in the show should pay off, and she hopes it will bring a large crowd of students. "We have put a lot of time into it," she said.

The concert will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Hall. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased in the Pit or at the Student Union Box Office.
