Code Mix-Up Gives 2 ASG Delegates Voting Privilege

Changes to the ASG's code resulted in an increase of three to four voting delegates and removing Daum from a voting position.

Amanda Taylor and Charity Sturdivant, who last week were selected as non-voting ASG delegates for UNC-CH, were named full voting delegates, Hiller said.

Hiller said the changes were made to comply with the ASG code, which was revised last year to increase the number of voting delegates to four for each of the 16 campuses in the UNC system. Hiller said three voting delegates were originally appointed by UNC-CH because last year's administration of student government did not update its code to comply with the revisions to the ASG code.

Hiller said that he and Student Body President Jen Daum will go over the entire UNC-CH student government code to look for any additional revisions that still need to be made but that he does not believe there are any more inconsistencies between the revised ASG code and the UNC-CH student government code.

Daum was originally tapped as a voting member of the UNC-CH delegation, but Hiller said she will now serve in a non-voting role.

Hiller said Daum's new status will not change her capacity to lead the delegation because the four members of each school's delegation traditionally vote as a consensus. "I can't imagine the (UNC-CH) delegates splitting their vote on any issue," he said.

Although no other students were named as non-voting delegates, Hiller said several students who applied for the position will attend ASG meetings and assist the voting delegation.

"This scenario works out for us because we can send some unofficial delegates to do field work at ASG meetings and train to become future delegates," Hiller said. "It is in our best interest to give some students who are interested the chance to do hands-on work."

Hiller said the students' responsibilities as ASG delegates will extend outside the organization as members of the N.C. General Assembly and UNC-system Board of Governors consider using tuition increases to help fund the UNC-system in light of state budget cuts. "These are the people that are at the forefront of lobbying for higher education."
