Members Endorse Freedom

Members of the UNC-system Board of Governors -- charged with examining an academic freedom resolution -- have paved the way for the full board to support the University's intellectual autonomy.

The BOG Educational Planning and Policies Committee unanimously voted in favor of a resolution supporting academic freedom Thursday.

The resolution will go before the full board for a vote Sept. 13.

"It is only right and proper that we do this at this particular time in the history of our University," said BOG Chairman Brad Wilson.

The full board failed to pass a similar resolution at its Aug. 9 meeting.

The resolution was prompted by a provision in the N.C. House budget proposal stipulating that no state funds can be used at public universities to study one religion and not give play to all known religions. The House proposal was a response to UNC-CH's summer reading selection "Approaching the Qur'
