Questions Loom At Season Outset

Several starting jobs remain undecided.

Gone are 2001's initial optimism and skepticism surrounding Coach John Bunting and his hard-nosed, professional mentality.

No matter whom you ask, no one on the 2002 North Carolina football roster wants to talk about last year.

"I don't want to compare this team to last year's team," safety Dexter Reid said. "We have a new motto: 'Whatever it takes.' Last year's over with, and we're looking forward to this year."

But that doesn't mean remnants of last year's 8-5, Peach Bowl-winning season don't exist and that the comparison can't be made.

A quarterback controversy? Sure, that's in the making.

Bunting has yet to name a starter, and has said that both Florida transfer C.J. Stephens and incumbent sophomore Darian Durant will get snaps in the Tar Heels' Aug. 31 opener against Miami (Ohio).

A shaky running back situation? Yup, that too.
