Young Democrats to Host Bowles at UNC

Bowles will speak and field questions

U.S. Senate hopeful Erskine Bowles will try to increase awareness among students about important campaign issues tonight at a question-and-answer forum sponsored by the Young Democrats.

The forum, part of the Young Democrats' first meeting of the year, starts at 8 p.m. in 100 Hamilton Hall.

Susan Navarro, co-president of the Young Democrats, emphasized the importance of the forum as an outlet for all students to voice their questions.

"We urge everybody to participate," she said.

"(Bowles) wants to share his ideas. We want students to really be able to have (their questions) answered."

Navarro said Bowles will speak for about 15 minutes and then participate in a question-and-answer session.

The Young Democrats will not sponsor any more candidate visits before the Sept. 10 primary, Navarro said.

Other candidates running for the Democratic nomination include Rep. Dan Blue, D-Wake; former Durham council member Cynthia Brown; and N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.

Both Blue and Brown spoke on campus during the 2001-02 school year. Navarro said that despite repeated attempts, Young Democrats was unable to arrange a forum with Marshall.

Bowles, a Greensboro native, graduated from UNC in 1967 with a business degree.

He served as White House chief of staff from 1996-98 under President Clinton. Bowles also was director of the Small Business Administration under Clinton in 1993.

Bowles' ties to North Carolina include Charlotte's merchant bank Carousel Capital, which he helped found in 1996.

Bowles will focus on higher education issues, the state of the economy and health care among other topics, said Bowles spokesman Brad Woodhouse.

He added that Bowles views the opportunity as a chance to reach out to young voters.

"He'll be talking about why he's running for Senate and what he hopes to accomplish there," Woodhouse said. "He'll encourage young people to support him in the primaries and in the general election."
