Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, that forward, senior Susan Bush, has spent much of the last three years on the sidelines, the last two of which were due to torn anterior cruciate ligaments.
A healthy Bush this season has been a welcome boost for a team that lost several contributors to graduation and recent injuries.
At the Duke/adidas Classic this weekend, Bush scored one goal and earned four assists.
"(Despite her injuries), she's already one of the best playmaking forwards we've ever had in terms of getting the endline, finding people, getting assists," said UNC coach Anson Dorrance.
Bush's teammates are no less aware of her talents.
"On the field, she brings another element to our game because she's so great at beating players down near the endline and serving into the box," defender Leslie Gaston said.
Bush entered UNC as a highly touted recruit in 1999, but her injuries limited her early contributions. She has, however, found a silver lining.
"It's been frustrating, but it may actually be a blessing in disguise," Bush said. "I've learned and studied the game a little bit and figured out what I need to work on in my own game."
The senior has primarily served as a play-making forward during her career, earning 28 assists in 51 games.
