Joseph Rauch's offensive, misinformed and totally unnecessary (column) misses the entire point of choosing a vegetarian lifestyle.
As a vegan, I am protecting my own health while not supporting the environmental degradation and resource waste resulting from animal agriculture, as well as the immense and needless cruelty to animals.
Rauch ignores the ethical, health and ecological issues that contribute to the choice to go veggie.
His argument contesting what purpose cows serve "in the grand scheme of things" (in other words, to him) is ridiculous, and his belief that civilization developed because of "our desire to eat meat" is simply wrong.
Furthermore, "as a guy," I am insulted by Rauch's implication that masculinity relies on killing and eating helpless animals.
What purpose does this obviously unfunny and uninformative (column) serve other than to offend those people who clearly care more about their health, the environment and animals than Rauch does?
Why did Rauch bother to write such rubbish, and why did The Daily Tar Heel waste the space to print it?
