School Board to Narrow Superintendent Search

As the board discussed qualities it wishes to see in a new superintendent, it looked over the results of an Orange County resident survey. The survey, conducted by the N.C. School Boards Association, noted which qualities residents look for in a new superintendent.

According to survey results, the most important quality is the ability of the superintendent to motivate staff, students and parents to work together in providing an outstanding educational program.

The second and third most important qualities given by the community are the ability to effectively represent the school system at the local and state levels and to demonstrate leadership in ensuring safe environments for students and staff.

As the school board members discussed community and staff needs, they voiced concerns of their own. Chairwoman Dana Thompson said it is important that the board select a "long-term person" to fill the post vacated this summer by Randy Bridges.

Board Vice Chairwoman Delores Simpson added that the superintendent should not reform too much in the district because there are many positive things happening. "The new superintendent should continue to take the school district in a positive direction and protect and nurture the things we do well," she said.

The board plans to read the 30 applications it received for the post. It will reconvene in a closed session Tuesday with the top 10 to 15 candidates in mind.

As the discussion came to a close, board member Keith Cook said it is important the school board continue its work during and after the search process.

"As long as we do our job, we have no choice but to keep the superintendent on track," Cook said. "The superintendent is only as strong as the school board he works with."
