The good news that UNC-Chapel Hill leads the rest of nation in diversity through its admission of minorities is consistent with Chancellor (James) Moeser's goal of transforming UNC into the No. 1 public university.
But maintaining a high quality student body and simultaneously being the leader in admissions diversity was not an accident of history.
The catalyst for this national distinction is Jerome A. Lucido, vice provost and director of admissions.
A genial, tireless and recognized authority in his field, he is also a consummate ecumenical spirit.
So many admissions directors talk diversity. Jerry, as he is affectionately known, does it the hard way.
He practices it.
President John F. Kennedy, while delivering an address at a university, once said, "If we cannot now end our differences, we can at least make the world safe for diversity."
Jerry Lucido has dedicated his office to maintaining high academic standards at UNC while helping to make the University safe for diversity.
