N.Y. Pizza Closes for Remodeling

A skeleton of wood is all that is left of the floor in I Love NY Pizza on Franklin Street.

The walls are now bare, and stacks of 2-by-12 pieces of timber lie across the floor. The only remaining feature in the inside is the blue menu board.

The owners are remodeling the restaurant at a cost of $125,000. It is slated to reopen in mid-February.

Owner Abdou Mahmoud, who has owned NY Pizza for more than a year, said the store needed to be remodeled because it was designed poorly.

"It wasn't designed well in the first place, so we hired a very good designer this time," Mahmoud said. "We're trying to get more space."

Senior Tony Wagman said that he liked NY Pizza just the way it was and that people went there for the cheap late-night pizza, not the environment.

"I don't think what NY Pizza was selling was their environment," Wagman said. "I think they were selling late-night pizza."

The menu will stay almost the same, with a few items being added to the selection, such as an Italian salad and lasagna.

Along with the some new selections, the owners are bringing in new equipment.

"I love NY Pizza," Mahmoud said. "We've spent $125,000 to upgrade our store."
