Pickel to Join SBP Contest

Junior Dan Pickel, a public policy major from Albany, N.Y., announced Friday his decision to run as a write-in candidate for student body president.

Pickel's name will not appear on the ballot because he missed the mandatory Jan. 14 meeting for candidates.

Pickel is circulating a petition and writing letters to get his name on the ballot. But Brian Fauver, chairman of the Board of Elections, said Pickel's chances of being included on the ballot are slim because it is not clear that he made a concerted effort to attend the meeting.

Pickel said he tried to contact the Board of Elections after Winter Break, but Fauver said he did not receive an e-mail from Pickel until after the meeting.

As a write-in candidate, Pickel will have to abide by all campaign regulations, including spending limitations, but he will not receive funding from Student Congress.

Fauver also said Pickel will be fined an unknown amount for hanging campaign signs before Student Congress disperses funds Monday.
