UConn Win Reaffirms Student Body's Faith in Doherty's Performance

TO THE EDITOR:

Still elated hours after Coach Doherty led his young team to a huge victory over UConn, many students were shocked to hear that a large circle of alumni as well as media members feel that Doherty's job should be in jeopardy. Many media outlets were heard saying that this victory can only "keep the monkey" off his back. We don't know what monkey they're talking about.

Since returning to his alma mater, Doherty has been faced with the challenge of rebuilding what was one of the NCAA's great programs, as well as working with players whose talent did not meet what Carolina fans had come to expect. Until now. He has worked tirelessly to recruit top-notch talent, and now that it's here the alumni dissatisfaction is all the more puzzling. We have three freshmen McDonald's All Americans, the youngest starting lineup in college basketball, an 11-5 record including two victories over top six teams, and still there is dissent.

Our support for Coach Doherty and his program increases with each game, win or lose. The team continues to improve and learn, and the possibilities for the future seem limitless. So in response to the alumni and media who no longer have their finger on the pulse of Carolina basketball we would like to make this clear: We support Matt Doherty and look for his continued involvement in our program for years to come.
