TO THE EDITOR:
I find it very unfortunate that a lecturer's e-mail aimed at preventing further anti-gay hate speech in the classroom has been labeled as "discrimination" and "harassment." I believe the true verbal assault involved the student's disparaging remarks in the class toward homosexuals.
Would there have been a federal investigation if a teacher had called out a student for making harmful and offensive comments against women or racial minorities?
This incident should be a wake-up call for the administration actively to communicate the anti-harassment policy to the University community and to prepare instructors on how to prevent and handle classroom situations involving verbal slams on oppressed social groups.
