TO THE EDITOR:
I am writing on behalf of my colleagues in the UNC Department of Chemistry with regard to the Friday letter to the editor from Maya Parson and Dana Powell, entitled "Professor's hosting of shoot should have been criticized."
I wish to make it clear that the UNC Department of Chemistry does not support or condone in any way the personal actions of Malcolm Forbes, which are referred to in this letter.
My colleagues and I are deeply distressed and disappointed by Forbes' actions. We have worked hard to ensure that the chemistry department is a place where all women - students, faculty and staff alike - feel welcome and comfortable.
I hope you will share this letter with your readers so that we can publicly reassure our students, the University community and the public of our department's commitment to the education of all our people.
