Large painting stolen from Student Union early Monday

A painting valued at $2,033 was stolen about 4:30 a.m. Monday from the Student Union, officials reported.

The artwork was connected to an alarm system, but because of faulty programming, police were unable to locate the source of the of the theft as it occurred.

The 4-by-3-foot painting, "Temple" by local artist Linda Ruth Dickinson, was taken from a stairwell on the south end of the newly renovated Student Union.

"The alarm did go off at 4:36 a.m., but it was programmed in such a way that police couldn't see where it was coming from," said Union Director Don Luse.

There was no evidence of a break-in.

Scott Hudson, associate director of the Union, said the faulty alarm system, installed by UNC Electronics Shop, has been repaired.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, there was no security guard on duty. Hudson said officials have no leads on suspects.
