Henry victorious in NCAA regionals

FROM WIRE REPORTS

Junior Carol Henry took the individual NCAA Region III championship with a winning time of 19 minutes, 57.5 seconds Saturday at Lake Kristi in Greenville.

Senior Erin Donohue completed the 6K course in 20:07.4, good for second place overall, helping the Tar Heels finish third overall in the team competition.

Rivals Duke and N.C. State finished first and second, respectively, to secure automatic bids to the NCAA Championship meet. Henry's time was a career best for the 6,000 meters.

Senior Alice Schmidt crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 20:47.9.

Meghan Owen, 28th in 21:07.9, and Nicole Boykin, 36th in 21:24.0, rounded out the scoring for the Tar Heels, whose 80 points were nine points behind Duke's winning score of 71.

The Wolfpack improved on its fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships by finishing second with 75 points.

By virtue of finishing in the top four overall, Henry and Donohue automatically advance to the NCAA Championships as individuals. The Tar Heels as a team hope to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA meet.

The UNC men competed in the 10K race later in the day and finished tied with Virginia Tech for 14th place in the 29-team field.

Senior Brian McGovern led the way with a 37th-place time of 31:23.4. N.C. State won the team competition, outlasting William & Mary to win the title.

UNC to face Duke at noon

North Carolina's football game Saturday against Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium will kick off at noon.

The game will be televised live by Jefferson-Pilot Sports, seen locally on WRAL.

Duke stands at 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the ACC after defeating Clemson 16-13 on Saturday.

North Carolina is 5-5 overall and 4-3 in league play after downing Wake Forest, 31-24, on Saturday.

The two teams have met 90 times on the gridiron, with the Tar Heels holding a 50-36-4 all-time series advantage.

The series began in 1888 when Duke earned a 16-0 win. Duke went 5-0-1 in the first six meetings but then lost 10 of the next 11 contests.

The Blue Devils and Tar Heels will play for the coveted Victory Bell, which Duke won last season for the first time since 1989.
