The final exhibition game for the North Carolina women's basketball team against the larger Athletes in Action provided the Tar Heels with a more physical challenge.
"They muscled us up some, and their size bothered us," said UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell. "When they're standing side-by-side, that's a factor, but when on the move, it's our advantage."
UNC's speed translated to a 92-57 victory Tuesday, led by top scorers Camille Little and Ivory Latta, who added 24 and 17 points, respectively.
Although No. 9 North Carolina led the Athletes by seven at the half, Hatchell said the team missed some easy shots and left the Athletes open for a few of their own.
UNC had a 13-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half but proceeded to let the Athletes come within three with two minutes to go.
"We were trying some different things on defense but went back to straight man-to-man," Hatchell said.
The Tar Heels improved their offense after the break with renewed energy and speed, increasing their shooting percentage from 46 to 68.
Hatchell said a smaller lineup has been working for the team, adding that what the lineup lacks in size, it makes up for in athleticism.
"Even though they're small, they can jump," Hatchell said.
