$5,200 stolen from 2 ATMs near Smith Center on Sunday

A total of $5,200 was stolen from two separate ATMs close to the basketball office of the Smith Center on Sunday, according to University police reports.

Police responded to the report at 6:22 p.m. Sunday and found $500 worth of damage to a glass door to the basketball office area, reports state.

Officers on duty verified the vandalism and felony larceny before contacting UNC investigations.

No further information is available at this time.

 

Chemistry professor wins membership in academy

Joe DeSimone, distinguished professor of chemistry and chemical engineering at UNC and N.C. State University, was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

He was one of 74 new members and 10 foreign associates elected to the organization, one of the highest honors awarded in the field of engineering.
