Public forum will address Chapel Hill’s 2005-06 budget

The Chapel Hill Town Council will hold a public forum tonight to allow input to be considered in the development of its fiscal year 2005-06 budget.

The hearing will take place at 7 p.m in Town Hall.

The council plans to look at the status of its 2005-06 budget preparations, preliminary capital improvements program and grant proposals.

Representatives from town advisory boards such as the public arts and greenways commissions will give presentations to the council.

There will be an opportunity for citizen comments, including comments from mayoral assistant Emily Dickens, who will present a recommendation for a placeholder on the budget for the county’s 10-year plan to end homelessness.

More information can be found at http://townhall.townofchapelhill.org/agendas/ca050323pf/AgendaFaceSheet.htm.

The council’s budget review advisory committee has been meeting during the last two months to discuss the budget.

Town Manager Cal Horton has suggested that costs might exceed revenue dramatically because of increasing debt service on voter-approved bonds and construction on the new town operations center, among other things.

He has estimated that the shortfall might require a 10-cent property tax increase.
