Police log for March 23

  • Chapel Hill police received reports Monday of a suspicious character standing outside the Bank of America on Franklin Street with a handgun, reports state.

    Police spokeswoman Jane Cousins said someone called police, upon which the suspect fled down Franklin Street toward the post office.

    No robbery occurred, and police are still investigating.

  • An employee of the Better Sleep Store in Carrboro was arrested Tuesday after he was involved in a minor vehicle crash near Umstead Drive near Estes Drive Extension, Chapel Hill police reports state.

    According to reports, Bernd Joerg Kurz, 27, of 101 Todd St., was arrested by police after the crash and admitting to drinking four beers.

    He was given a breathalyzer, and his blood-alcohol content registered at .15 percent

    He was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while impaired and driving with a suspended license and was released on a written promise to appear May 3 in Orange County District Criminal Court in Chapel Hill.

  • A Pittsboro man was arrested at the Chapel Hill police station Monday on one count of felony possession of burglary tools after being arrested on one misdemeanor count of driving without a license, reports state.

    According to reports, Antonio Demetrius Burnette, 40, of 624 Hamlett Chapel Road, was arrested at 137 W. Franklin St. for the driving without a license charge.

    While being processed at the station, he was found to be in the possession of cutting tools that police qualified as burglary tools.

    He was scheduled to appear Tuesday at the first appearance in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.

  • A UNC student was arrested Monday and charged with one misdemeanor count of driving without a license after police found that he had revoked licenses in two states, reports state.

    According to reports, Andrew Davis Sims, 20, of 213 E. Franklin St., was arrested at 101 Stinson St. after an officer watched him not stop at two consecutive stop signs.

    He is scheduled to appear May 17 in Orange County District Criminal Court in Chapel Hill.

  • A Chapel Hill teen was served with two warrants Monday for one count of felony breaking and entering from a vehicle and one misdemeanor count of larceny, Chapel Hill police reports state.

    According to reports, Armando Martiniano May Riff, 18, of 7 Timberlyne Road, was served with both warrants to appear Tuesday at the first appearance.

    He was released into the custody of his mother, reports state.

  • An area man was served a criminal summons Tuesday on one misdemeanor count of assault on a female, Chapel Hill police reports state.

    According to reports, Scott Lee Walters, 42, of 1319 Tallyho Trail in Chapel Hill, was served with the summons at 11:24 a.m. to appear April 7 in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.
