Senior gets fellowship for study, teaching in humanities
UNC senior John W. Steen IV won an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies this spring.
The award covers tuition and fees for the first year of graduate school and allots a $17,500 sum for living expenses.
Steen received one of 91 fellowships and was one of 648 people to apply for the honor nationwide. The award is given to students who seek careers as teachers of the humanities.
Steen will pursue a doctorate in comparative literature at Emory University, and the award puts him closer to his goal of becoming a university professor in the subject. Steen will graduate with highest honors May 15.
