- Chapel Hill police arrested a local man at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday and charged him with one misdemeanor count of driving while impaired, one misdemeanor count of having improper registration and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving, reports state.

According to police reports, Charles Francis Welsh, 38, was involved in a crash on Airport Road and walked away from the scene. When police arrived, they detected a strong odor of alcohol in the vehicle.

Welsh first told police that he did not drive the vehicle but later admitted that he did, according to reports. Police arrested Welsh after he performed poorly on field sobriety tests.

Welsh was taken into custody, where he registered a .06 blood alcohol content, reports state.

Welsh was brought before the magistrate, who found no probable cause for the driving while impaired charge, according to police reports. Welsh was issued a written promise to appear June 28 at Orange County District Court in Chapel Hill.

 

- A UNC senior was the victim of breaking and entering and larceny from her vehicle at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Chapel Hill police reports state.

Reports state that someone reached into the victim’s vehicle through an open window on North Columbia Street and stole a Furla handbag valued at $500, a Verizon cell phone valued at $80 and the victim’s wallet, which contained credit cards and cash.

 

- A UNC senior reported that he was the victim of larceny from his vehicle and vandalism at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Chapel Hill police reports state.

Reports state that someone stole the license plate from the vehicle on Church Street.

 

- A West Virginia woman was the victim of burglary with force at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Chapel Hill police reports.

Reports state that an unknown burglar pried open a door to an apartment on Europa Drive, entered the residence and removed property from it.

The burglar stole a Dell computer valued at $3,000, a pair of Serengeti sunglasses valued at $125, and a calculator, according to police reports.

 

- A School of Nursing student was the victim of breaking and entering and larceny at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Carrboro police reports state.

According to reports, the victim left for work at 9 a.m. When she retuned to her home on Jones Ferry Road, she noticed that the front door was open and discovered a broken window pane.

Reports state the suspect stole a CD player boombox valued at $30. Police were unable to collect fingerprints from the house.

 

- A Spotted Dog employee was the victim of damage to property at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Carrboro police reports state.

Reports state that the victim was using his cell phone in his parked car on Estes Drive when a man wearing black jeans and a gray T-shirt walked up to the vehicle and began yelling at the victim through the window.

When the victim refused to roll down the window, the subject kicked his driver’s side door, causing $200 worth of damage, and walked away, reports state.

Police searched the area but were unable to locate anyone who fit the description.
