This week the University hosted Marty Warner, one of four candidates for University registrar.
During a Monday forum Warner portrayed himself as a pragmatic optimist to about two dozen guests.
“I believe small, continuous steps will get us to that brighter future,” said Warner, who currently serves as registrar at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
He assured those attending the forum that as registrar he would not encourage broad changes, but instead would prefer more effective, incremental revisions.
Warner said UNC should let other schools stub their toes on excursions such advanced technological updates and learn from their mistakes.
“It’s wise to be behind the cutting edge — somewhat behind.”
The University registrar oversees course scheduling, classroom assignments and registration — just a few of the plethora of responsibilities of the position.
The next registrar also will be heavily involved in the upcoming revision of the College of Arts and Science’s curriculum.
Warner, a UNC alumnus, said he enjoys his work as a registrar because it plays into his penchant for structure.
