Stadium construction to go through summer

Boshamer, Carmichael on schedule

At the midway point of renovations for Boshamer Stadium, things are starting to take shape.

Passers-by can see the outlines of the new two-story concession stand and state-of-the art press and luxury boxes, which loom imposing over the still-unfinished field.

The outfield is a muddy quagmire, soaked in the recent rains and littered with construction equipment.

Originally, the stadium demolition was delayed until Oct. 1 of last year, but that delay has not changed the predicted completion date.

"It's off the charts," Rams Club Major Gift Director Russell James told The Daily Tar Heel earlier in the year. "The main purpose of it is to get more people associated with Carolina baseball. The fan experience is going to be 100 times better."

Most notable among the renovations is the increased seating. The new Boshamer Stadium will have 4,000 more seats than the old model - nearly doubling the original seating capacity of Boshamer.

Some of those seats are now luxury suites and boxes on the upper enclosed level.

The massive, curving press box and expanded seating should strike a familiar chord in UNC players. Those improvements resemble nothing so much as Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

That's the same Rosenblatt that the Tar Heels have spent their last three summers playing in as part of the College World Series - a remarkable achievement of consistent excellence that helped coach Mike Fox earn Baseball America's Coach of the Year award.

Perhaps UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour was swayed by Fox's constant refrains of "this is the best place to play" while coaching the Tar Heels in Omaha the past three Junes.

"I'm excited," second baseman Kyle Seager said during the season. "From what the coaches and everybody have been saying, it's going to be top-of-the-line, one of the best in the country."

Preliminary estimates for the Boshamer Stadium renovation put the expected cost at $19 million total - up from an earlier estimate of $14 million. Funds for the construction come from the Fund Raising Educational Foundation.

Other contributions have come from across the baseball world, including former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner, who has multiple ties to UNC, donated $1 million to the construction. As a thank-you, Boshamer Stadium's courtyard will be named for the Steinbrenner family.

Just up Ridge Road from Boshamer Stadium is Carmichael Auditorium, the home of North Carolina's women's basketball team. The arena is now fenced off from the street as extensive renovations will force Sylvia Hatchell and her team to play home games in the Dean E. Smith Center in the 2008-2009 season.

The renovations to Carmichael are scheduled to be completed in time for the 2009-2010 basketball season.
