At the midway point of renovations for Boshamer Stadium, things are starting to take shape.
Passers-by can see the outlines of the new two-story concession stand and state-of-the art press and luxury boxes, which loom imposing over the still-unfinished field.
The outfield is a muddy quagmire, soaked in the recent rains and littered with construction equipment.
Originally, the stadium demolition was delayed until Oct. 1 of last year, but that delay has not changed the predicted completion date.
"It's off the charts," Rams Club Major Gift Director Russell James told The Daily Tar Heel earlier in the year. "The main purpose of it is to get more people associated with Carolina baseball. The fan experience is going to be 100 times better."
Most notable among the renovations is the increased seating. The new Boshamer Stadium will have 4,000 more seats than the old model - nearly doubling the original seating capacity of Boshamer.
Some of those seats are now luxury suites and boxes on the upper enclosed level.
The massive, curving press box and expanded seating should strike a familiar chord in UNC players. Those improvements resemble nothing so much as Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
That's the same Rosenblatt that the Tar Heels have spent their last three summers playing in as part of the College World Series - a remarkable achievement of consistent excellence that helped coach Mike Fox earn Baseball America's Coach of the Year award.
