The Daily Tar Heel

DTH should be ashamed of front page quotations

TO THE EDITOR:

As a student newspaper that purports to be one of the premier college newspapers in the country you should be ashamed of your pathetic attempt to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11.

Instead of honoring those who died you chose to run a series of quotes on the front page speaking to everything but 9/11. The focus should not have been on the aftermath of the event but rather on the enormity of the devastation that Americans felt on that day.

In fact the only quote not pushing political agendas simply said that the speaker didn't remember anything and the day didn't mean anything to him. Well" I can assure you that there are thousands of students on campus who could have told that reporter exactly what it was like to watch those terrible events unfold on TV and who knew exactly what it meant.

Perhaps what is even more disturbing than the fact that the ""tribute"" article was anything but that is that it was very clearly and obviously pushing a political agenda. Not only did the quotes neglect to talk about the event" they virtually all condemned subsequent acts by the United States.

While such political opinions and discourse are more than welcome on campus I sincerely doubt many of us who did remember 9/11 cared to read it in what should have been a tribute to the men and women who died in New York Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.

As a newspaper The Daily Tar Heel is expected to leave opinions out of front-page articles— especially political ones. The DTH should be deeply ashamed of this inappropriate and one-sided slant as it is unprofessional and destroys any aura of objectivity that its readers may have somehow had managed to hold on to.
