TO THE EDITOR:
On Sept. 11 I was extremely disappointed with our University community and The Daily Tar Heel. Rather than reading a respectful observance and remembrance of 9/11 I picked up the DTH to find a front page splashed with resentment dissent and political soapboxes – all surmounted by images of the American flag.
This is a painful day reserved for mourning our fallen comforting survivors and coming together as a nation. I don't care where you stand with regards to the war in Iraq.
Both sides can stand on opposite ends of the Pit and scream their opinions all day 364 days of the year for all I care. But not today. NEVER today. Those who lost their lives seven years ago deserve better than that from you from me from us.
I am ashamed and appalled at the disrespect shown by my fellow students and the DTH. Yes we all have the right to freedom of speech. But common decency would temper that right if only for today with compassion and respect. Leave your political dissatisfaction on Sept. 10 and pick it up again on Sept. 12. Allow 9/11 to be remembered with grief and honor.
