The Daily Tar Heel

Bravo to Alex Kowalski for food choices column

TO THE EDITOR:

In response to Alex Kowalski's column on food choices (Pursuit of perfection: What you eat counts" Jan. 22)" all I can say is ""Thank you"" and keep digging!""

He captured very nicely the importance of being intentional in our eating habits and did so without turning his nose to the heavens.

In addition to his well taken point" I would add that the act of choosing and consuming food which happens to be our most important source of renewable energy" is ""an agricultural act"" as Wendell Berry so famously posited. When we choose locally produced, minimally processed, and naturally grown plants and meats, we support our community, which includes more than the human world on which we depend. This type of thinking and acting is the way forward to a more sustainable future that is mindful of our role in the ecology of this special place.

If this sounds ripe to you, check out Michael Pollan's latest book In Defense of Food."" It will liberate your appetite.
