Dance Marathon reflects faulty charitable priorities

TO THE EDITOR:

Let's face it folks: $394"278.94 is quite an impressive sum of money.  Dance Marathon is known to raise bundles of cash every year and for what?  For the kids.  Yep that's right for sick kids" most of whom ironically enough have health insurance.

To be honest" I'm thrilled that DM is finally done this year because I'm sick (almost as much as one of the actually sick children) of hearing" ""Do it for the kids!""  This little phrase strikes an emotional chord with each passing soul.

But"" I guess ""Do it for the homeless!"" doesn't have quite the ring to it now" does it? While 1828 people joyfully danced for 24 hours straight shouting that same perturbed phrase from before700000 people nationwide are homeless on any given night between 300 and 400 of them in the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.

The economy isn't getting any better and that number will rise. So why are we still giving to one of the richest hospitals in the country and not helping those who are unemployed homeless" and without the health insurance to even walk through those hospital doors?  Isn't it more plausible to help them instead?

On Franklin Street alone" you often hear students opening doors to their favorite restaurant or the stumbled footsteps of Thursday's drunken debauchery but if you listen closely you can often detect the faint voice of someone seemingly glued to the sidewalk whispering" ""Got any spare change?"""" but the feet keep walking.  I guess ""homeless"" just doesn't compare to ""sick kid.""
