Carolina Review piece on affirmative action factual

TO THE EDITOR:

In the letter to the editor Monday titled Carolina Review's February Issue is Offensive Garbage"" Ms. Arielle Reid misses the point. The February issue in no way attacks the black race. It does question the value of diversity, which is ambiguous, but this is not a slander on minorities in any conceivable way.

With regards to my article, which seems particularly offensive to Ms. Reid, I stand by what I said. Upon rereading the article, I do not see how it could possibly be interpreted as slanderous. The statistics cited about graduation rates were from the Office of Institutional Research and can be found at oira.unc.edu for anyone who cares to know the facts.

The definition of affirmative action is that some people get admitted who were slightly less qualified than others because of race. This is not racism, not opinion, but fact. Ms. Reid cited her impressive resume in order to show that I was wrong in calling her stupid. However, of course, I did no such thing, and it is silly to suggest otherwise.

For my full article, I would encourage anyone interested to pick up a copy of the latest edition of the Carolina Review.
