Carolina United can help students learn to coexist

TO THE EDITOR:

The recent discussions regarding the Carolina Review's February issue have brought the potentially divisive topic of race to the forefront of our campus consciousness. The verbal attacks are what stand out the most in these arguments. Words like ""ignorant"" prejudice"" and ""racist"" have thus far dominated the discussion boards.

However" discussions of race and other sensitive issues do not have to divide us. We must realize that our words have impact. Often times it is not what you say but rather how you say it.

Respectfully sharing different opinions can build understanding on all sides.

Carolina United is a program through which we have witnessed productive discussion regarding sensitive topics without verbally attacking one another. Here students have the opportunity to work through the divisions that exist on and off this campus.

Applications are due this Friday at 5 p.m. Please consider this mind-stretching opportunity.

Despite our many differences finding the common ground we share is vital for becoming a better humanity.
