The Daily Tar Heel

When a few censure free speech we are all affected

TO THE EDITOR:

This letter is addressed to the students and others who protested at the event at which former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) tried to speak last week. Freedom of speech is necessary for all of our citizens and if anyone is deprived of this freedom then we all are deprived of it. The protesters should realize that if they deprive anyone of freedom of speech the day will come when someone else will protest them and deprive them of these same rights.

In 1959 students were writing to The Daily Tar Heel to praise Russian communistic totalitarianism and to criticize our democratic governmental system with its freedoms. Which system do these protesters really want?
