Author John Grisham has been selected as the May 2010 commencement speaker.
Grisham, who has authored 23 novels, was picked by Chancellor Holden Thorp in consultation with the Commencement Speaker Selection Committee, which is made up of students and administrators.
“John is an engaging speaker who will have a profound message for our graduates and their families,” Thorp said in a press release. “His prowess with the written and spoken word makes him an excellent choice for a Commencement speaker. He has an inspirational story to share.”
Grisham, who has a background as a lawyer, centers his books around legal drama.
He has numerous ties to UNC. He spoke on campus in September during the N.C. Literary Arts Festival. Grisham’s daughter, Shea, graduated from UNC in 2008 and now teaches in Raleigh. His wife, Renee, is a junior English major. The two bought a condo in Chapel Hill in 2008.
The commencement ceremony will take place May 9 at 9:30 a.m.
