For Mandolin Orange, the Carrboro duo composed of Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin, it all started at a bluegrass jam at the Armadillo Grill.

The duo, connected through local outfit the Big Fat Gap during an off-the-cuff number in 2009, has, since then, fine-tuned their Americana-infused sound by continuing to add instruments and styles to their repertoire.

Combining a multitude of instruments including violin, fiddle, guitar and harmonica, the duo creates music with traditional undertones. Add in a sense of adventure and a love for live cuts, and Mandolin Orange transcends genres and labels, using the diverse local music scene as a launching pad.
