Orange Co. Board of Commissioners discussed preliminary park map

The Orange County Board of Commissioners will get a look at the master plan of a new park in May after seeing a preliminary map at its Tuesday meeting.

New Hope Park at Blackwood Farm will be located near the intersection of New Hope Church Road and N.C. 86 between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

David Stancil, the director of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, and landscape architect Marabeth Carr presented a map of the park to the board.

The map showed locations for possible loop trails, open fields and community gardens for the park.

But athletic fields were left out, at least for now.

“One thing we tried not to do is over-design the site,” Stancil said.

He said the department wants to keep the land open so it can be flexible in future designs.

Commissioner Bernadette Pelissier said she liked the general outline of the plan, calling it “multipurpose and low impact.”

But she raised concerns over the safety of New Hope Elementary School students, who would be crossing the street to use the park.

No sidewalk exists on the street that separates the school and the park.
