Krispy scream: doughnuts are fun — until triple bypass surgery

Students should stick to supporting local, health conscious eateries instead of the deep-fried desserts peddled by Krispy Kreme.

The doughnut franchise announced a Franklin Street location to open in late August.

Sure, the idea of a Krispy Kreme is exciting. Warm, gooey treats. Dessert for breakfast.

The franchise is even serving unique concoctions such as the doughnut sundae: ice cream and chocolate syrup slathered on the original glazed variety.

But if you’re trying to save money, shrink your waistline and keep your arteries working, there is a smarter option than buying the sugar-coated dessert: bypass it altogether.

College years are the first time students can assert their independence as adults and make self-reliant decisions.

Giving in to that sweet tooth can be awfully tempting, but keep in mind doughnuts boast up to nine grams of trans fat.

Trans fat can cause a numerous amount of health problems in the long run, including heart disease and obesity.

Now is the time for students to develop healthy habits for the rest of their lives.

Health advisers recommend more greens, more salads and fruit for dessert.

Although it can be difficult for students looking for a cheap and healthy fix on Franklin, there are healthy options available.

Utilize the bus system. Carrboro is a great place to head to check out local, organic fare and farmer’s markets.

Weaver Street Market and Whole Foods offer a variety of pre-made meals and organic fruits and vegetables.

Students should explore their options before settling on whatever is convenient.

There is a time and a place for glorified fried dough, but students need the presence of mind to realize their health now will affect their future.

Sure, grab a doughnut to relieve exam stress, but it shouldn’t be an everyday treat.
