Former longtime professor Shirley Weiss died Aug. 31 at the age of 89.
Weiss taught for more than 35 years, eventually serving as associate research director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies.
Weiss and her husband, Charles Weiss, endowed the Weiss Urban Livability Program, a fellowship program aimed at improving living conditions in modern communities.
The couple also financially supported other campus institutions, including the Ackland Art Museum, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and the University Library.
Weiss was given the Cornelia Phillips Spencer Bell and Distinguished Alumna awards for her service to UNC.
