The Daily Tar Heel

In its April meeting Tuesday, the Faculty Athletics Committee discussed ways to help varsity athletes meet their academic goals.

The priority registration policy for athletes, passed in 2007, will be up for review in the fall and may be tweaked at that time, said Robert Mercer, director of academic support for student athletes.

The committee also discussed adjusting course timing for athletes.
Deborah Eaker-Rich, assistant dean of the School of Education, said athletes majoring in education face obstacles because student teaching and sequential course scheduling conflict with their athletic schedules.

Medical track majors also pose problems to athletes, said Dana Gelin, associate director for athletic communications at UNC.

The committee is looking into a new Athletes in Medicine program to help with the problem, Gelin said.

This program would use previous UNC athletes as mentors for current students.
